Hodos 1.2.0 • The road maps itself

The road maps itself.

Everyday journeys reveal the road defects we all encounter. Hodos turns passive smartphone sensor observations into public road intelligence — automatically, silently, and privately.

Core Engineering

Built for unattended precision.

Reliable crowdsourcing demands statistical filtering, zero driver distraction, and strict on-device privacy.

Adaptive MAD Filtering

Dynamic Median Absolute Deviation noise-floor tracking continuously self-calibrates to heavy bus suspensions, motorbikes, or cars without manual tuning.

Zero Distraction Guarantee

100% silent background foreground-service. The smartphone never chimes, never vibrates on bumps, and never displays intrusive popups while driving.

On-Device Privacy Perimeter

The first and last 250 meters of every trip are excised directly on the phone. Home and office locations never leave device RAM.

Spatial Corroboration

Multi-pass density clustering (DBSCAN) aggregates observations from multiple vehicles to confirm persistent physical damage over transient vehicle jolts.

Dual-License Sustainability

Software code is MIT licensed and fully auditable. The hazard dataset is CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, preserving free access for citizens while licensing commercial fleets.

Open GIS Formats

One-click GeoJSON and GPX exports ready for immediate import into QGIS, Kepler.gl, ArcGIS, or municipal road maintenance dispatch systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about testing and deploying Hodos.

Hodos runs a low-power foreground service that continuously samples the phone's high-precision accelerometer at 50 Hz. It applies a dynamic Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) algorithm to filter out ordinary vehicle rumble, flagging sudden vertical shockwaves paired with GPS coordinates.
No. Hodos enforces a strict zero-distraction policy. The phone never vibrates, never chimes, and never prompts for input while in motion. You turn it on when you depart, leave it in your pocket or vehicle mount, and focus completely on driving.
Every recorded trip automatically excises the first 250 meters and last 250 meters directly in on-device volatile RAM before synchronization. Private driveways, residential homes, and private workplace entrances are completely trimmed before data leaves your phone.
Yes. All verified observations are exported in standard GeoJSON and GPX formats under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 for research and public governance. Commercial fleets can request dedicated enterprise licenses.
