Hodos uses your phone's motion sensors and location to identify possible road defects. You can view the hazard map without enabling automatic mapping.
Location and motion
When automatic mapping is enabled, Hodos reads motion and location signals to recognize journeys and detect unusual road impacts. Analysis runs on your phone. Raw accelerometer samples and complete GPS routes are not uploaded.
Each road observation may include a location, time, GPS accuracy, estimated speed, hazard type, severity and detection score. Repair and clear-road reports can reference an existing hazard.
Identifiers
The app creates a random installation identifier and a separate identifier for each journey. The installation identifier persists in local app data and accompanies observations so repeated reports can be compared. It is not derived from your name, phone number or advertising ID. It is not proof of a unique physical device.
Storage
Observations are stored in Appwrite and are not publicly readable through the app. The aggregated hazard map is public.
Your phone holds a cache of map hazards, up to 50 journey summaries, and any observations queued for upload in app-private SQLite storage. That queue does not currently use separate application-level encryption.
The aggregation service examines the last 120 days of events. This is not a deletion schedule; older server observations are not currently deleted automatically.
Your controls
Turn off automatic mapping in Hodos or revoke location and activity-recognition permissions in Android settings. Clearing local app data or uninstalling Hodos removes local information but does not erase observations already submitted to the server.
Hodos does not intentionally include advertising or third-party analytics SDKs. Hosting providers may process technical connection data necessary to operate the service.

For data questions or deletion requests, contact the maintainers through the Hodos repository. Please don't share precise location details in a public issue.
